The week after taking a vacation tends to be disheartening. No one likes to think about how 36 hours before she was laying on the beach enjoying the sweet breeze of the Red Sea. Teacher training, however, made the transition even more excruciating. I can confidently say that I have never been more disappointed by a class before. Sure, I struggled to remain engaged in Natural Science 120 despite the dramatic film series on the formation of the earth or Humanities 110 did not quite energize me to dive into Homer with reckless abandon. BUT, at least those classes required some brain activity. This week’s teacher training gives BS an entire new meaning.
In efforts to exercise my brain, at least minimally, I resorted to mathematical proofs. I conjured up some functions to integrate and derive, in addition to proving the square root of two is irrational and there are an infinite number of primes. For most people, this sounds painful, not pain relieving, but for those brief moments I remembered why I majored in mathematics in addition to Middle Eastern Studies. I also brought along some brain teasers and logic puzzles that I passed along to my colleagues who were also coping with brain hemorrhaging induced by the droning presentation on the differences between collaborative and cooperative teaching styles. Oh, and I wrote down every restaurant I have eaten at for the last month, what I ate, what it cost, and my review of the experience. If you are planning a trip to Cairo, let me know and I can pass my notes along.
