Last night (10.12.10) Grace and I went to Carrefour (the Egyptian equivalent to Walmart) to buy some Christmas decorations. The big day is in exactly two weeks and this 70 degree weather is messing with my mental countdown. It still feels like summer, so maybe I will just have to convince myself I am celebrating Christmas in July! Anyways, we went to get some decorations for the apartment so that we feel a little more in the Christmas spirit (plus we are hosting our friends for Christmas weekend here in Alexandria and the apartment must be dressed for the occasion). I was skeptical about what we would find, but there was a rather decent selection of artificial trees and ornaments, so we were able to pick out quite a handsome Charlie Brown tree.
What was more entertaining than decoration shopping, though, was the crowd of Egyptians taking pictures with the Christmas tree displays. Maybe this was the first year Carrefour carried tree… Okay, that cannot be true. Maybe there is just some novelty about Christmas decorations with Egyptians that I did not anticipate since there are a fairly decent number of Christians in Alexandria. Hmmm. Who knows, some days I just chalk up all my inquires to the fact that Egypt is full of unexplainable phenomenons in the least likely situations.
Well, at least we have some things to decoration my apartment with. Oh, and to really make an event of the decorating, Grace and I are going to make hot cocoa and dance to Christmas music while we trim the tree. The plan is to do it tonight. I will post pictures after the masterpiece is complete!
