I love this city more than chocolate. A bold statement if you know how much I enjoy chocolate, but it is completely true. I mentioned this before, but this city has an uncanny ability to make me smile. While the education system has me extremely frazzled and frustrated, Alexandria offers enough compensation from its cultural opportunities (Alex, Grace, and myself went to Stomp Afrika Saturday night), delicious restaurants (I took Eric to Zanili’s for fajitas first thing after he arrived on the night train), normal aka Western shopping malls (Grace and I have an unhealthy addiction to shopping/buying), and various modes of public transportation (I am a certified pro at taking the microbuses!).
Or consider other moments of bliss: On my walk to church this past Friday, it sprinkled. Yes, that’s right, it was raining! No, it was not a down pour and did not last that long, but it did rain. And, the evenings are cool enough to wear a jacket, which is fantastic news because I brought some good lookin’ jackets from Ann Taylor Loft that I have yet to wear. Cornish runs release an extra large amount of endorphins, or at least I have convinced myself this; I attribute it to the fact that I am running along the Mediterranean Sea, being cooled by a fresh breeze despite the heat. And to balance our healthy runs, McDonald’s ice cream is just a 15 minute walk from our apartment, something we take advantage of late at night when we needed a sweets break from grading.
I know each of these things seem trivial, but together they create a strong sense of comfort, leading me to call this place home.
